America's Most Beautiful State? It's a Four-Way Virtual Tie

In a remarkable display of geographic consensus, Americans are virtually split four ways when asked to name the country's most beautiful state, according to a new ThoughtCove poll of over 10,000 respondents.

The survey results reveal an unprecedented tie, with Utah leading by the slimmest margin at 25.3% (2,528 votes), followed by California at 25.2% (2,513 votes), Michigan at 24.8% (2,476 votes), and Colorado at 24.7% (2,469 votes). The difference between first and fourth place represents just 59 votes out of nearly 10,000 cast.

Perhaps most intriguingly, the poll reveals that travel experience dramatically shapes perceptions of beauty. Among the tiny fraction of respondents who voted for states they had never visited, Colorado dominated with 75% of those votes, while Utah captured the remaining 25%. However, this represents an extremely small sample of just 4 respondents total.

The data suggests that familiarity breeds appreciation rather than contempt when it comes to natural beauty. The overwhelming majority of respondents—over 99%—voted for states they had actually visited, indicating that direct experience plays a crucial role in shaping opinions about scenic beauty.

Travel frequency also appears to influence preferences, though subtly. Well-traveled Americans who have visited more than 20 states showed a slight preference for California (26% vs 25.7% for less-traveled respondents), while those with more limited travel experience were marginally more likely to choose Utah.

Key Findings

  • Just 59 votes separated the top choice (Utah) from fourth place (Colorado) in a field of nearly 10,000 responses
  • 99% of respondents voted for states they had personally visited
  • Among the few who voted for unvisited states, Colorado was the clear favorite at 75%
  • Extensive travelers (20+ states) slightly favored California over other options

Methodology

This poll was conducted by ThoughtCove from November 26, 2025 to April 19, 2026, collecting 10,027 total responses from U.S. adults. The margin of error for the overall results is approximately ±1 percentage point.
